Urbis continues to support 'The Longest Night' Illuminate Project14/01/2011

Urbis have continued to support local arts-based project Illuminate in their Christmas event, 'The Longest Night.'

The event opened on North Street during the traditional late night Christmas shopping week in Bedminster and closed on the longest night of the year, the winter solstice (17-21 December 2010). Film, animation, installations, robotics, puppetry, displays and exhibitions were all used to open up and feature disused properties and generate an interest in the area. Once again the event was a huge success and the organisers did a wonderful job of bringing the local community together.

The Frieze is installed into The Robinson Building.16/12/2009

The stone frieze from the original Robinson Headquarters, that stood in Redcliffe Street, has been renovated, cleaned and installed by Cliveden Conservation and Urbis. The frieze, which consists of fifteen panels of carved Oolitic limestone, depicts the industrial manufacturing processes undertaken by the Robinson Company. It is on loan from Bristol Museum Galleries and Archives. At the moment, extra protection has been put around the frieze to protect it from any damage whilst the building is finished and it will be unveiled before the launch.

Robinsons Frieze to be restored and displayed.25/06/2009

The original frieze from The Robinson Headquarters in Redcliffe Street has been offered to Urbis by the Industrial Museum who's care it currently rests in.

The frieze, which depicts the workers in the factories owned by Robinsons, was retained when the building was demolished and after sitting in storage for some time, The Industrial Museum has asked if we would be interested in restoring and displaying it in the Robinsons Building in Bedminster, one of the original factories owned and built by E.S & A Robinsons Ltd.

We will keep you updated on this donation and if viable, will make a welcome and interesting addition to the atrium at the Robinson Building, bringing a little piece of its history inside the building.

The Robinson Building Topping Out Party01/05/2009

On Thursday 30th April, Urbis Development and Urbis Build held a topping out ceremony for Robinsons to celebrate the two new floors added to the existing old paper bag factory building. These two floors will contain some of the most impressive views in Bristol and can see as far as Dundry right over to the City Centre, Clifton and the Suspension Bridge.

Traditionally, a topping out party celebrates when the topmost stone, slate, thatch etc is due to be fixed to the building. The ceremony itself is often signalled with a branch of evergreen being hoisted to the top of the building, and a toast drunk by everyone to celebrate the completion of the structure.

Although, on this occasion there was no evergreen hoisted (apart from the Christmas tree that was on the roof all of December!) we did invite current purchasers, business partners and friends along to celebrate with us and toast to the succesful completion of the roof. It also gave people a sneak peek inside the building to see how work was progressing.

Thank you to everyone for coming along on the night.
